What’s With The Fish?
If you’re an aquarium enthusiast and are disappointed to learn that this isn’t a blog about fish-keeping, I apologize. I will admit complaints that goldfish are a poor branding/logo choice. My goldfish have been the face of my blog since I started writing it, but not because I write about fish.
Maybe it’s because I always position my laptop so that I can look from screen to fish and back while I write, because nothing is easier on tired eyes than a nice tank of goldfish. Maybe it’s because of what my grandmother said. Many years ago, she fed the tank while I was out of town for a few days. She worried that life in the tank must be boring. “It just seems like someone ought to read them a story,” she told me. If life confined to forty gallons of water, a miniature Parthenon, some plants and a few companions is a little boring, I’m not sure they could hear if I did read a book to them, but the calming company they provide has certainly helped me make countless pieces of life into stories. I’m not sure I could write without the soothing splash of their water filter.
Or maybe it’s just because they do funny things like sit side by side in a perfect row, looking around while their gills flap, as if they enjoy each other’s company.
I hope that whatever tank you live in, there is somebody else in it whom you appreciate. And if not…Well, that, I find, is the start of the best true stories.
