While I haven't read "Dusk" yet myself, I am familiar with its premise and have read commentary, blogs and reviews. And if I operated out of a sense of loyalty to everyone I interview in my professional life, I would need charts with hundreds of entries just to keep track of all those allegiances.

My general feeling is that no modern anthropological commentator - "Dawn", "Dusk" or in between - is likely to be able to convey the whole, accurate truth of human ancestry. The exact truth about the origins of our sexuality will probably always be somewhat of a mystery. So it's good to have authors that approach it from different angles.

I'm curious what your thoughts are about the debate? Have you read 'Sex at Dusk' or are you planning to read it?

I understand you probably feel some loyalty to Ryan because of this interview, but I'm sure your loyalty to truth is greater, as the sub-title to your blog is 'Fiction Need Not Apply'. If you read 'Sex at Dusk' I think you will come to realize as I did that 'Sex at Dawn' is fiction. But then again maybe you won't, maybe you will find that 'Sex at Dusk' didn't make a good argument – in which case I'd love to hear why.

In any case I think any fans of 'Dawn' owe it to themselves to hear the other side.

Hi Alaina Mabaso,

Was wondering if you had read or heard of a book called 'Sex at Dusk' by Lynn Saxon? If not, I highly recommend it. It's a sort of counter argument to 'Sex at Dawn', it gives a much broader perspective of this topic and especially of the research that Christopher Ryan uses as evidence.

I posted my comments in a review of 'Sex at Dawn' on GoodReads.com (and elsewhere) that you can read here:
http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/575180197

I'd like to add that Christopher Ryan did reply to my comment. I have to say I was disappointed by his reply, but I appreciate that he replied.
(Regarding Ryan's assertion that Lynn Saxon is a pseudonym, not that it really matters but I have good reason to believe that he is actually wrong.)

And there is more discussion about 'Sex at Dawn' vs 'Dusk' here that you might find interesting as well:

If you are worried about social upheaval, why do you approve of taking money under threat of force and giving it so single mothers?
I'd say that if you really cared about a peaceful and loving society, you would not approve of organized theft.
In a hunter gatherer society I would say the coerced would have abandoned the coercer.
I always think it is a strange idea when people think that welfare money does not increases single motherhood. It's like saying that the availability of bailout saves does not increase risk-taking by banks. After the knowledge that even wearing a seat belt makes people drive faster.

Yes, surprises are fun. Yes, secrets are hard to keep. When I planned a secret party for my husband's 50th, I was bursting with untold plans. Then my son was accepted to medical school, and his best friend called to plan a surprise party. The day after the 50th! Sure! I can handle that! Not! I was terrified of blabbing to the 2 people I speak to most often. For 8 days I dared not speak to them about ANYTHING. Both parties remained secrets, and then I was able to remember to sleep. Happy celebrations, Alaina.
